This summer, the Girl Now Woman Later team expanded through our internship program. This program helps cultivate young talent by giving them hands-on experience in non-profit work.
These interns have brought fresh perspectives and enthusiasm to our mission. By providing communications and grant writing support, they’ve helped GNWL write about our programs, research and apply for grants, create social media and web content, and so much more. We’ve also continued to work with high school ambassadors during summer break with outreach to other organizations, strengthening our efforts to end period poverty by sewing pads, and exploring other sewing-related activities.
Today, we’re excited to introduce you to the interns who are making a difference in menstrual health education and have them explain why they chose to help us further the GNWL mission.
“Throughout my academic and professional career, women’s rights and access to education have always been at the center of my goals. GNWL’s goal to tackle the multiplier effect that limits girls’ ability to freely continue their education and grant autonomy back to their lives resonates with me deeply. I am grateful for the opportunity to aid in GNWL’s mission to promote a more equal society through accessible, comprehensive menstrual health education.”
“I chose to volunteer with GNWL because it’s a great way for me to use the privilege of education that I am lucky enough to have to help ensure the academic futures of other girls. I love that GNWL is committed to providing vital menstrual hygiene supplies, breaking the stigma surrounding periods, and engendering confidence in young women. I hope to continue making this kind of impact in my career after graduation.”
“Being able to get hands-on experience working in the non-profit system and give to a cause I feel strongly about has been ideal. GNWL’s mission is unique in that it focuses on the real consequences of inadequate menstrual care – no girl should ever have to decide between her education or dignity. Working towards the goal of helping alleviate period poverty inspires me every day in the work that I do for GNWL, and it means much that I am a part of something larger than myself.”
“GNWL works for the noble cause of not only providing young women with the facilities and resources they need but ultimately helping enable them as students to receive the education they deserve. I wanted to join GNWL to be a part of this cause, working to ensure that the girls in Burkina Faso can have proper resources and help that shouldn’t be regarded as a privilege but a standard. I felt connected to their mission and the overall goal of raising these young girls to be the strong women of tomorrow. Helping and educating women who experience period poverty is a cause that I am very passionate about. GNWL has allowed me to grow this passion and see my real-life effect on others.”
